The British Book Award for Author of the Year, currently sponsored by the Reader's Digest, is one of the few categories that have consistently featured in the British Book Awards since their inception in 1990.

The presence of the name of HRH Prince of Wales as the inital award winner, which can only have been as a result of the publication of his A Vision of Britain: A Personal View of Architecture might surprise many; no doubt the judges had their reasons.
