The Computer Systems Research Group at UC Berkeley was created when the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) awarded the University a contract in April 1980 to further develop the BSD system to meet the needs of the DARPA research community. The project was originally overseen by Professor Bob Fabry and lead programmer Bill Joy. The CSRG was responsible for all the BSD releases from 4BSD in October 1980 to the final 4.4BSD-Lite2 in June 1995, after which the CSRG was disbanded.
