Beginning in 1769 with Father Junipero Sierra founding the San Diego Mission until 1823 when the last mission, San Francisco Solano de Sonoma was completed, 21 missions were built in Alta California and were connected via the El Camino Real. Many the colones built around the mission became sucessful towns, the most famous being San Francisco, San Diego, and Los Angeles.
