In January of 1998, police were investigating the disappearance of Carly Martinez from her dormroom at NMSU. What they eventually found after several months was that her supposed boyfriend Jesse Avalos and an accomplice kidnapped her, took her to a canyon, raped her, beat her brains out with a crowbar as she pleaded for her life, and then set her body on fire. Probably the most gruesome and gut-wrenching atrocity to ever happen at NMSU.
