Cetus, or the Whale, is an equatorial constellation (meaning that it is located near the celestial equator), and can be found just south of Aries, between Taurus and Pisces.

According to Greek mythology, Cetus represents the sea monster that was sent to kill Andromeda, but it was defeated by Perseus. Later it was thought to represent the whale that consumed Jonah.

The constellation is also the home of a remarkable star, Mira (latin for "wonderful"), or Omicron Ceti, a variable star.
