Charles Dodge

Computer Music Pioneer. One of the first composers to use tape loops and simple early synthesizers to create entirely new works, usually using a tape of a musical performance, such as Any Resemblance is Purely Coincidental, based on a recording of an opera. Also a pioneer in speech synthesis. Currently Visiting Professor of Music at Dartmouth College

(1942 - ) Dodge got his start at Bell Labs, developing speech synthesis technology for use by the phone company. He translated this technlogy into computer generated spoken poems, some of which became radio hits in Scandinavia during the early 1960s. He founded the electro-acoustic music program at Columbia University, and is the author of the textbook Computer Music: Synthesis, Composition, and Performance
