Sir Charles Kingsford Smith was a Pioneer Australian Aviator. In 1928 he became the first person to fly across the Pacific ocean from America to Australia.

Kingsford Smith disappeared during a flight from Australia to the UK in 1935. The primary Sydney airport is named in his honour and (until the introduction of the plastic banknotes) his face and his plane, the Fokker "Southern Cross" were on the Australian 20 dollar bill. He has now been replaced with fellow aviator John Flynn

In 2001, his historic flight was matched by a robot-controlled aircraft, the Global Hawk named "Southern Cross II".
