Common lisp the language was written by Guy L. Steele Jr. of Thinking machines, Inc. as a textbook and reference on the language John McCarthy had made, Common Lisp. It is clear, concise, and excellent as a reference once you already know some LISP.

It was not intended as an introduction to LISP, since it assumes some knowledge of the language, but it is an excellent reference, and for years was the de facto specification of Common Lisp.

A second edition has been published, and it can be found either online or purchased in fine bookstores.
