Slang for a prophylactic. The term descends from the ubiquitous presence of used instances of these handy objects washing up on the beaches of Coney Island, resembling small pale dead fish. Where they come from varies, but in past times (circa World War II) they tended to wash out into the Atlantic from Brookyln's antediluvian sewers.
