Cornelia Meigs was born on December 6, 1884, in Rock Island, Illinois. She graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1908 and taught English at St. Katherine's School in Davenport, Iowa, until 1913. Here, she experimented telling stories to the children, learning their likes and dislikes.

Later she returned to Bryn Mawr to teach English on the college level. She was a professor from 1932 to 1950.

Cornelia wrote twenty-four children’s books. She won the Newbery once and was runner-up three times. She also wrote short stories and plays, frequently using the pseudonym of Adair Aldon.

Cornelia's middle name was Lynde. She died in 1973. The Bettendorf, Iowa public library named a study room after her.
