Dacryostenosis is the medical term for the condition in which the patient suffers a blocked
nasolacrimal duct. Because of this the
tears that are secreted into the eye cannot drain away as normal, and so there is an overflow. This leads to sufferers seeming to constantly cry.
This is a reasonalby common congenital disorder, and usually cures itself in about six months. In the rare cases in which the duct is sufficiently malformed that it cannot funtion, a dacryocystorhinostomy must be performed to open up the duct. This is a minor surgical procedure.
In adults, the condition often occurs following an eye infection, and leads to an increased likelehood of further infection. Daily massaging of the lacrimal sac may be enough to remedy the problem.
