Damon Knight was one of the truly influential figures in science fiction. Damon founded the
Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) and the
Nebula awards. In 1995 he was named by the SFWA as a Grand Master - its highest honor.
Knight encouraged, taught, critiqued, and mentored innumerable young writers. He co-founded the Milford SF Writers Conference as well as Clarion - the pre-eminent science fiction workshop.
Shortly after high school Knight moved to New York City. He published his first science fiction story in 1941. He was also a member of the Futurians -- a communal group of writers/friends that included among others Isaac Asimov, Cyril Kornbluth, Dave Wollhein, James Blish, Judith Merril, and Frederick Pohl.
Knight's 1996 novel Humpty Dumpty: An Oval was named a New York Times notable book.
Born in Oregon in 1922, Damon was married for many years to author Kate Wilhelm. He passed away on April 15, 2002 in Eugene, Oregon.
