House of Birds
By Jack K---- Esq.

Doctor Eamon came one day
And filled the house with birds,
Larks to sing in open fourths
And crows in minor thirds,
An open prison for this choir
Of music without words.

How the birds outlived the house
No one can explain,
And though it's been an age
Old Eamon's flock still remains,
Pressed beneath the shadows,
Inside the waterstains.

Antietam's children in the dark
And smoky forest lie
With eyes on the horizon
Blue as lapis lazuli,
Sang like birds in the hope
That they too would forget to die.
