As many as 10 million animal species may live in the deep sea, though most of those have never been seen. The largest deep sea canyon on the West coast is off of Monterey Bay, and the
Monterey Bay Aquarium has the world's largest collection of deep sea creatures. Some animals are too fragile to survive the ascent and/or the aquarium, so they are studied
in situ.
