The Demeter Fragrance Library is a small store in New York City’s East Village which sells a line of 165 very unusual perfumes. The company is the brainchild of one Christopher Brosius, a former taxi driver, perfume salesman, and employee of Kiehl's, a skin care company. Tired of mainstream brand-name perfumes, he concocted a whimsical line of fragrances that mimic everyday things and places. Ranging from the unusual to the absolutely insane, some of his scents include:

Dirt (the biggest seller)
Earthworm
Mildew
Sushi
Fig Leaf
Lily of the Valley
Play-Doh
Suntan Lotion
String Bean
Sawdust
Steam Room
Laundry Room
Funeral Home
Snow
Tomato
Riding Crop
Rubber
Leather
Turpentine
Greenhouse
Graham Cracker
Sugar Cookie
Brownie
Honey
Eggnog
Peanut Butter Egg
Chocolate Cream Pie
Golden Delicious
Peanut Butter Cookie
Sushi
Lobster
Glue

No, I am not making this up. See for yourself: Demeter fragrances can be found at a number of stores in the Northeast and Washington DC, including some Nordstroms. It’s even popped up in London. The line has been a success, and the scent Snow won two Fifi Awards, an honor in the perfume industry.

Brosius is currently working on Puppy and Top of a Baby’s Head. But don’t hold your breath waiting for Puke or Formaldehyde, because there are some lines he won’t cross…
