A cabinet agency in the Executive Branch of the United States government. The DoE is responsible for the nation's nuclear research (among other things). Recently, the Department of Energy has done a rather spotty job keeping it's nuclear secrets safe. Under the Clinton administration, it practically handed over designs for the US' most advanced weapons to China.

One of the more interesting aspects of the DoE is its funded labs. Many of the older ones started based on some form of a nuclear program, but most now are widely diversified, covering many scientific fields.
