Detonography is a method for making metal sculptures that was invented by Evelyn Rosenberg. It is unique because it utilizes plastic explosives to make large sculptures with complex details. First a plaster mold is made that has the three dimensional image that is to be transferred to the metal. Then the mold is covered with a thin metal plate. Plastic explosives are then detonated on top of the metal plate, leaving the impression of the mold on it. This bas relief is known as a detnograph. The detnograph is sometimes treated with with corrosive chemicals to create a patina. This makes a unique and interesting sculpture.
