Baureihe (Class) 140 is a child of Deutsche Bundesbahn's first electric locomotive program, which also brought forward the classes 110, 141 and 150. It is a light multipurpose loco, built from 1957 on by Henschel, Krauss-Maffei, Krupp, BBC, AEG and SSW.

140 is a medium freight loco and thus rather slow; today they do service with DB Cargo, a Deutsche Bahn business unit. 140s retrofitted with dynamic braking have been classified as Baureihe 139.
