A giant, literally and figuratively; a tenor saxophonist from Los Angeles who first gained fame for his bebop tenor "chases" with Wardell Gray. He had the definitive beefy, sensual tenor sound. Spent most of the 60's and 70's living in Denmark (many great jazz musicians over the years have had to relocate to Europe, due to mass apathy in the States), but made a triumphant return, late 70's. Nominated for an Oscar for his acting in the jazzpic Round Midnight. Died 1990.
