Most countries publish a
Diplomatic List - a guide to diplomatic representation by foreign governments and bi/multilateral organisations in the
capital city. It serves as a useful '
who's who' in the diplomatic community for locals, hopefully preventing embarrassing incidents like postmen delivering mail to the wrong
Korean embassy or parking wardens
wheelclamping the Spanish Ambassador's car.
A typical Diplomatic List would show in the alphabetical order of the host country the names of countries and organisations with accredited representatives. Each entry would have address details and opening hours of the embassy's chancery, and the names and ranks of accredited diplomats (and the names of their partners. There may be a separate list of non-resident acredited representatives, a calendar of National Days, and importantly, a list of the heads of mission in order of seniority (determined by the length of tenure of an ambassador's posting; the most senior may be called the Dean). Compilation is normally the responsibility of the protocol section of the host government's ministry of foreign affairs.
A Consular List provides the same kind of information of accredited consuls in a country, including honorary consuls.
