Member of the Cambridge Four. Maclean, like his compatriots, was a graduate of Trinity College at Cambridge and went on to become a Soviet spy within the British government.

Maclean worked for the Foreign Office from 1934 to 1944, reporting innumerable secrets to the KGB on the side. In 1944, he was appointed first secretary to the British embassy in Washington, D.C.

Working overtime might have been his downfall. Maclean spent so much time securing information related to the development of nuclear weapons that he attracted the attention of the CIA. They reported him to MI5, and he was ordered back to England. He fled for Russia before he could be arrested, together with his friend and fellow agent, Guy Burgess.

He died of a heart attack in 1983.
