I am an alcoholic. Not a drunk or a lush or a social drinker. Those people are amateurs. I will have this disease as long as I live.

But I will not be sick.

I could go on about the meetings I attend, or the time I spend talking folks through the dts at a detox center, or any number of other things I do to stay sober. But not now.

I've come to realize that this isn't a fight anymore. I'm an alcoholic. Big deal.

I'll die with this disease, but I don't have to die from it.

I feel really great (and at a loss for adjectives) today, because I enjoy being sober. If you're not an alcoholic, you probably have no idea what I'm talking about. That's okay. For me, feeling the way you do every day, warts and all, is a novel state. I plan on enjoying it.

The universe can run its own business without my help for one more day, thankyouverymuch.
