The Ferrara Pan
Candy Company was founded in 1908 by Salvatore Ferrara, an Italian
immigrant who had worked on the
Sante Fe Railroad for four years before opening a pastry and
confection shop in Chicago. His sugar-coated
almonds sold well throughout the
Midwest, and in 1919 he joined his brothers-in-law, Salvatore Buffardi and Anello Pagnano, in a
partnership expanding the range of his manufacturing plant. The plant's site, 2200 West Taylor Street in Chicago, is where the original Ferrara
Bakery remains today. Ferrara Pan is still owned and managed by the Ferrara, Buffardi, and Pagnano families. The "Pan" part of the name derives from the process of
panning, a method of making candy pieces from single units.
Ferrara Pan manufactures Red Hots, Jawbusters, Lemonheads, Atomic Fireballs, Boston Baked Beans, and Black Forest Gummies.
