Fishes Reflecting Memories

He Watches the fishes swim behind glass;
She watches his eyes reflecting blue,
and together they wonder why time had to pass.

She smiles at his awkward, blushing mass,
shifting weight from shoe-to-shoe.
He Watches the fishes swim behind glass.

Fluorescent lights make his hair shine like brass,
forcing her to stroke it like she used to do,
and together they wonder why time had to pass.

Remembering their time stranded on the country side and out of gas,
Her lips meeting his for the first time, fingers touching hair then too.
He Watches the fishes swim behind glass

in such a sterile setting, unlike tickle fights in grass,
when the sun set a hazy, beer-colored hue.
And together they wonder why time had to pass.

But the carefree alcoholic kisses could never last
because it was never love, and their sweet nothings were never true.
He Watches the fishes swim behind glass,
and together they wonder why time had to pass.
