A
series of
forts built on Sullivan's Island in the
harbor of
Charleston,
South Carolina. The third one, built in
1809, is still standing.
The first fort was built during the American Revolution from palmetto logs, and the victory at the first battle there (one of the first American victories during that war) gave South Carolina its state tree and state nickname, The Palmetto State. The fort is named after the commanding officer during that battle.
Fort Moultrie is also where Confederate forces fired the first shots of the American Civil War on the Union soldiers on nearby island Fort Sumter. Because of both these important historical events, the island is now a national monument.
