Fred Daly

1913 - 1995

"The King of Canberra"

Fred Daly was first elected to Australian Parliament in 1943 and had a politcal career of 32 years, under 10 Prime Ministers, including Gough Whitlam and John Joseph Curtin. He was noted for his good humour and long service. Until his death, Fred Daly ran a bus tour of Canberra and wrote a historical column for The Canberra Times.

I remember Fred Daly fondly because in 1991 he awarded a knighthood to my Dad. The title is, of course, as meaningless as Daly's own sovereignty.
