FreeType describes itself as "A Free, Quality, and
Portable Font Engine". It is a library that does
TrueType rendering on many platforms.
For example, many X servers and Mozilla implement TrueType font support with FreeType library.
Oh, and it's open source and renders TrueType anti-aliasing better than Windows 95, even =)
