Friends of Lulu is a national nonprofit organization whose purpose is to promote and encourage female readership and participation in the comic book industry.

American publishers target their comics towards boys and men, and then comic book stores say that girls and women don't buy comics. This creates a cycle that makes it hard for women to get their comics published and distributed in America.

In Japan, women are the largest audience for comic books, and Rumiko Takahashi, the female author of Ranma 1/2 and Maison Ikkoku, is the richest person in the country.

It seems strange that in the U.S. the publishers haven't caught on yet, and to promote comics for girls, we only have grassroots efforts.
