The pan-European Gigabit Research and Education Network connecting over 3,000 research and education institutions in over 30 countries.

The successor to TEN-155 went on-line October 23, 2001, it took till November 30, 2001 to transfer all participant to the new network. It went officially into production December 1, 2001.

The network consists of a 10 Gbps backbone connecting the United Kingdom, France, Sweden, Germany, Zwisterland, Austria and the Czech Republic. Most of the other countries are connected through a 2.5 Gbps connection.

The network has 2 direct connections to the USA (UK, Germany) and is connected to most other European networks.

I am not sure what GÉANT means, I am guessing it is French for "pan-European Gigabit Research and Education Network".
