George Dewey. Hay (aka “"Solomn Old Judge”) was borin November 9th, 1895 in Attica, Indiana. While working as an announcer for WSM in Nashville, Tennessee in 1925 he founded the “WSM Barn Dance” later to be named “Grand Ole Opry.” Many of country music's biggest legends got their start at the Grand Ole Opry thanks to the “Father of the Grand Ole Opry” George D. Hay.

He was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1966.

He wrote “Story of the Grand Ole Opry” in 1945 telling where he got the idea for the Opry and the details of the first 25 years of the show..

The Grand Ole Opry's George D. Hay Awards began in 1974, and was named in Hay's honor. The first recipient's of this award were Roy Acuff, and Chet Atkins.
