Gestalt botany: A rather accurate technique for identifying annoyingly similar plants without being able to explain one's ability to do so. Frequently employed by people whose natural history skills are mighty, but who cannot be bothered to waste precious brain space remembering whether something has opposite or alternate leaf structure. E.g., "I dunno, that just screams Aster novi-belgii to me."
