An abbreviation for "Get Out of My Emergency Room" but also a slang phrase to describe a troublesome patient.

Probably most popularized by the book The House of God. Gomers were usually the problem patients and the elderly.

It wasn't just elderly, it was those problem patients who the doctor was tired of treating, probably not in the best of health, especially mentally, and never died. Ever.

It was the old crazy lady who would scream "Go Avay(sic)" for hours and kept taking swings at the nurse trying to fix her IV.
