The Good Friday Agreement was negotiated along three main strands. The agreement between the parties within Northern Ireland to set up an assembly was known as Strand One. Strand Two and Three dealt with affairs between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland and between the Republic of Ireland and Great Britain respectively.

There are 36 paragraphs in Strand One. In the text of the GFA these paragraphs are grouped under several headings. Here, these headings will constitute a separate node.

The first paragraph of Strand One appears below-

1. The agreement provides for a democratically elected Assembly in Northern Ireland which is inclusive in its membership, capable of exercising executive and legislative authority, and subject to safeguards to protect the rights and interests of all sides of the community.
