A style of death metal with a distinctive melodic twist to it, the Gothenburg Sound surfaced in the early 90’s and gets its name from the city of Gothenburg, Sweden where it originated. The bands In Flames, Dark Tranquility, and At the Gates are accredited with “creating” the style.

The Gothenburg Sound has become a very popular style in the death metal scene over the last decade, with newcomers Opeth, Arch Enemy, and Soilwork evolving the style by adding keyboards, cleaner vocals, and even chorus arrangements to their acts.
