Group IA chemical elements, or alkali metals, include hydrogen, lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, cesium, and francium. They are not found free in nature because they are so highly reactive; they react explosively with water.

Actually, hydrogen is a subject of major debate regarding what group it should belong to. It does not blow up in water, it isn't a metal, but on the other hand it isn't extremely noxious like the halogens are.

Alas, poor hydrogen shall linger in limbo forever. Helium gets a home with the noble gases.. It just isn't fair to poor little Hydrogen :(
