Highgate, two elegant villages in north London. The full name (never used) is the Hampstead & Highgate Express. Cos of all us intellectuals and artists wot lives round those parts, it devotes many pages to arts and theatre
reviews of all kinds, and overseas travel, and is said to be the only local paper with a
foreign policy.
The crossword is by Machiavelli, and is tolerable though often frustrating. Comes out on Fridays, price now 48p. The regular cartoonist Ken Pyne is known nationally, though that doesn't quite make him funny. For many years the editor was Gerald Isaaman, eventually succeeded by Mathew Lewin. These are significant political figures the way no other local editor could be, because of the political clout that Hampstead especially has in the governing classes' consciousness.
