Canadian documentary taking a look at the past and (mostly) the present of
DJ culture. Written and directed by
Marco La Villa, released in
1998.
Hang the DJ features interviews with famous dance music personalities such as Junior Vasquez, Carl Cox and Roger Sanchez, hip hop turntablists like Q-Bert, plus various other kinds of people somehow involved with the DJ phenomenon.
In my opinion the documentary is quite forgettable, and unable to present much new insight to the much-discussed subject. The most interesting parts to me were personal stories from some of the interviewed disc jockeys, especially Junior Vasquez who more or less "steals the show". It was also fun seeing a die-hard Beatles fan from the streets of London explaining to us why electronic music sucks. "It's music made in a laboratory for people doing drugs made in a laboratory." :)
