The Harney Peak Fire Lookout, Dam, and Pumphouse were built by the CCC in 1939 and are listed in the national register of historic places. Harney Peak elevation is 2207 meters (7,242 feet) and is the highest point east of the Rocky Mountains and west of the Pyranees Mountains of Europe.

The hike to the top, three miles one way, is well worth the effort, offering an incredible view of the surrounding scenery. The lookout tower is built almost entirely of stone and is a modest achievement considering what the builders had to go through to get building materials to the top. One of the most beautiful places in the Black Hills and not completely over run by tourists.
