Sainte-Claire, Deville, Henri, Etienne, a French chemist; born in St. Thomas, W.I., March 11, 1818; was educated in Paris. It was he who first produced aluminum (1855) and platinum in commercial quantities, and demonstrated the general theory of the dissociation of chemical compounds at a high temperature. He died in Paris, France, July 1, 1881.
