French military commander. Born 1611, died 1675.

After having served with the Dutch army, de Turenne entered French service in 1630. He participated as a military commander on the French side in the Thirty Years' War with significant success.

He later fought for France in several other wars: at the Battle of Dunkerque, 1658, de Turenne totally vanquished the Spanish forces, and he led the French army during the war against the Netherlands (1672-1675). He was killed at the Battle of Sasbach, 1675.

Posterity has judged de Turenne very favourably, and he is generally considered one of the great personalities of French military history.
