A
histogram is a type of graph. Think
nano-
bar graph. It's usually used to plot sequintial data, such as
skittles eaten/minute plotted by minute. Kind of like a line graph with the bottom half filled in.

This graphs the number of pixels that are increasingly light. If that wasn't too clear, look at the picture and then come back.
The graph starts on the left side. You see how the picture is mostly dark? The number of pixels that have, say, a darkness of 200 are plotted under 200. The number of pixels with darkness 199 are next to that, and so on until the lightest, which there isn't much of. Photoshop users (and probably gimps, but I don't know) can interactivly crop the graph, which stretches the histogram across the rest of the picture- Oh dear, this isn't very clear. Perhaps another example:
If I were to crop the last bit off the above histogram in photoshop (the levels menu, incase you wondered) it would stretch the remaining portion of the histogram and redistribute the luminosity accordingly. If there were previously 100 pixels with darkness 4, and I crop it at three, it will stretch the graph and most likely raise the number of pixels with darkness 4 to something like 120. This generally gives you more control in the brightness/contrast of you picture than a normal Brightness/contrast adjustment.
Histograms can also be used on other image channels, such as red, green, blue, or on other aspects of the image, such as shadow or midtones. This can be used to fix low quality video captures that are too blue, or pictures taken under florescent lights which are often too green.
