1999 IHL Turner Cup champions and 2003 AHL Calder Cup champions. Their name pays homage to the aerospace engineering industry. The team moved to the AHL in 2001 after 'the I' disbanded. In 2001-2002 the team became an affiliate of the NHL's Minnesota Wild.

Formerly, Houston's World Hockey Association team was also named the Houston Aeros. They were the team awarded to Dayton, Ohio which never played there due to the lack of a suitable arena, and moved to Houston. Gordie Howe and his sons Marty and Mark played for the old Aeros. The WHA team played from 1972 to 1978. During this time they had four first place regular season titles and two Avco Cup championships (back-to-back, 1974 and 1975). On July 6th, 1978 the team was disbanded, one year before the demise of the WHA itself.

Current AHL team colours: Blue, Green, Silver, Red, and White. The team retired Gordie Howe's #9 in 2003.

The Aeros have one member in the Hockey Hall of Fame. (Guess who.)
