Every dusk becomes evening, then night

long summer days fade, even as corner streetlights come on

                                                                                               prematurely,

as the last of bit of sun cuts through the trees

Every warm afternoon lead us toward Solstice,

the days are numbered and the evenings too

even those that seem to stretch on                                              forever

The transition is gentle

because Dusk is for grown ups on porch swings and

kids running through the yard,

chasing each other with not yet holiday sparklers

Do you remember your Mom's request:

                                                                                             Be back before dark?

seemed like a simple thing

until we looked around to see dark was already

                                                                                             here
