Ian Holm Cuthbert was born 12th September 1931 in the mental asylum in Goodmayes, where his father worked as a psychiatrist and superintendent. In 1954, after a year of National Service, he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company where he had his stage debut as a spear carrier in Othello. His first Broadway debut was in 1967 in a play called The Homecoming, the year after he has his first movie debut in The Bofors Gun. He gets a recommendation as Best Supporting Actor.

In 1998 he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, for his services to drama. He is now called Sir Ian Holm.
