Ιασιων
A son of Zeus and Electra (Table 7 and Table 25). Through his mother he was a descendant of Atlas. He lived with his brother, Dardanus, in Samothrace, though some legends said that he was a Cretan. A common thread in all these legends was his love for Demeter, but sometimes this love was unrequited, so he tried to hurt the goddess (or perhaps an image of her, see IXION). This at once aroused Zeus' anger and he killed him with a thunderbolt.
It was more often claimed that this love was mutual, however, and that Iasion united with Demeter on a strip of fallow land which had been ploughed three times. She bore a son, Plutus (Wealth), who went round the world spreading abundance everywhere. Diodorus claimed that Iasion was the brother not only of Dardanus but also of Harmonia. Zeus taught him the secrets of the island, which he passed on to numerous heroes. After his sister had married Cadmus he met Demeter, who was attracted to him and gave him wheat-seed. Later Iasion married Cybele by whom he had a son called Corybas, eponym of the Corybantes.
