It’s the beginning of a poem I never finished.

The poem is about a girl I used to know.

On Friday afternoons there were dances in the gym

Jamie danced barefoot, by herself.

“I dance like a jewel in the melting.”

That was under her picture in the yearbook.

Jamie moved to the Northwest after high school.

She met a man who had a cabin in the woods

They argued over something.

Jamie left without her shoes

She was a girl I used to know.

It was a poem I never finished.

In the gym the floor was cold

She was alone except for the earth.
