Indian Meal Moth (Plodia Interpunctilla)

Adults are about 16 mm long. The abdomen is very scaly and the rear wings are fringed. The bronze coloured wings have wide grey bands on them.

The Indian meal moth lays 50 - 150 eggs in batches over the food source, and the larvae hatch in approximately 5 days, dispersing over the food source.

The larvae grow to 10-20mm long, and this stage of development can last between 13 and 288 days depending on food supply and temperature. Under normal conditions the complete lifecycle of the moth is 56 days. The larvae construct a silk tube as a shelter, which is camouflaged with food particles.
