Refers to a style of architecture found in India that blends Hindu and Islamic traditions. Said to have begun with the founding of Ahmedabad (in Gujarat) by Sultan Ahmed Shah on the banks of river Sabarmati in 1411 CE. Examples include the summer palace of Tipu Sultan in Mysore, Karnataka (built in 1784), the palace of King Thirumalai Nayak in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, and the Gateway of India in Mumbai (previously, Bombay). Also can be found in certain buildings in other ex-British colonies, such as Malaysia, where the railway station in the capital Kuala Lumpur is a good example.
