The
basic idea behind the
American judicial system. That, when someone is
arrested and
tried for a
crime, it is up to the
prosecution to prove beyond a
reasonable doubt that the person is
guilty, and if that is not proven, then the person is treated as if they are
innocent.
Unfortunately, perception of the public and police often does not work this way. If a person is charged with a crime, especially one such as murder, rape, or child abuse, then the public often turns on them, treating them as if they are guilty. Police are also notorious about being rough on a suspect.
