The Institute for Social Research is located at the University of Michigan. They do research on the changing face of America.

Founded in 1946 by Rensis Likert, creator of the Likert scale, the ISR has four main centers:

Besides these large sections, there are several small centers, including the Survey Methodology Program, the Center for African American Living and so forth. ISR is a recognized world leader in quantitave social science research, and offers training through its Summer Institute to scores of the world's best researchers each year.

Most of the surveys conducted by ISR are grand scale, with tens of thousands of respondents with mixed-modality data collection. Though many marketing firms and private survey shops do more business, the ISR is trusted with the most sensitive and difficult research.
